What Data Helps Combine Running and Strength Training?
Someone once said that running should start from the backside. Not metaphorically, but literally. The stronger your legs, glutes, core and back are, the easier it is to maintain good running form – and the less energy each stride may require. A strong musculoskeletal system can also reduce the risk of injury, particularly when accumulating fatigue starts to affect your technique.
STRENGTH ISN’T AN ADD-ON - IT’S PART OF A RUNNER’S TRAINING
Elite runners have long understood the benefits of strength and supplementary training. Alongside their running workouts, they typically include strength or functional training at least once a week.
That applies to road runners, too, and is even more relevant for mountain and trail athletes, for whom strength and stability are particularly important. Among the athletes combining running with strength training are Amanal Petros, the current European Champion and World Championship silver medallist in the marathon; Yemane Crippa, who won the marathon in Paris; and Ben Dhiman, winner of UTMB Mont-Blanc 2026.
And you certainly don’t have to be a professional athlete to benefit from the combination.
Supplementary training is part of the training routine for 42% of runners in Germany and the UK. The figure stands at 39% in Poland, 37% in Spain, 35% in France and 34% in Italy. Interestingly, the data reveal a consistent pattern across all the countries analysed: the more frequently people run, the more likely they are to include supplementary training. [1]Among runners who also do strength work, those completing up to four running sessions a week typically include at least one strength session. For runners doing five or more sessions a week, that number rises to two strength or functional sessions.
It makes sense. More running means more load on the body – and a greater need to strengthen the system that keeps you moving.
STRENGTH TRAINING CHANGES THE GAME
If you run – or are planning to start training regularly – and you’ve always ignored strength work or treated it as an optional extra, it may be time to rethink your approach.
That doesn’t mean spending hours in the gym every week. When it comes to strength training, smart programming matters more than sheer volume. The key is to make sure your strength sessions complement your running rather than compete with it.
Data from devices such as the Cheetah 2 Pro and Active 3 Premium can help you do that. The trick is knowing which metrics to watch and, just as importantly, how to interpret them.
Strength training plays by slightly different rules than running. That raises three important questions:
- Why does TL (Training Load) work so well for describing running load, but not necessarily strength-training load?
- Which metric can give you a better indication of whether your body is ready for another hard running session?
- What type of run makes sense before a strength workout – and what should you do afterwards?
WHY TL DOESN’T ALWAYS TELL THE FULL STORY AFTER STRENGTH TRAINING
If you’ve already had your fourth date with your training data, you’ll know that training load is estimated using factors such as workout duration and intensity. One of the metrics involved is EPOC (Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption), which describes the body’s increased oxygen demand after exercise.
For running, this can be a very useful way of estimating training load. The problem comes when we try to apply exactly the same logic to strength training.
Picture a one-hour gym session. You spend 60 minutes doing squats, lunges, deadlifts, calf raises and core exercises. You’re sweating, your muscles are working hard and, by the end of the session, your legs may feel as though they’ve completely run out of cooperation.
And yet your heart rate may spend much of the workout sitting in the two lowest zones, with only brief periods in the higher ones.
The result? Your TL, calculated largely from metrics related to your cardiovascular response, may end up lower than the TL from an easy recovery run of the same duration.
Does that mean you’re less fatigued after an hour of strength training than after an easy hour-long run?
Not necessarily.
You’re simply fatigued in a different way.
WHY CAN YOUR LEGS FEEL LIKE CONCRETE AFTER THE GYM?
Strength training can place a substantial load on your muscles and nervous system even when your heart-rate graph looks relatively unremarkable.
You might finish your workout, check your data and see a surprisingly modest training load. Then you head out for a run the next day – and suddenly your legs feel heavy, your stride has lost its spring and a pace that normally feels effortless requires much more work.
This is where HRV, or heart rate variability, can provide another useful piece of the puzzle.HRV is an indirect indicator of how your autonomic nervous system is responding to stress and recovery. In simple terms, lower-than-usual HRV can be associated with greater physiological stress, while higher values may indicate better readiness for exercise.
There’s an important caveat, though: HRV should never be interpreted based on a single reading in isolation.HRV naturally fluctuates from day to day. What matters far more than asking, “Is my HRV high?” is asking, “How does today’s HRV compare with my normal range?”
HRV AND THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN “LIGHT” AND “HEAVY” LEGS
If you run regularly, you probably know both sensations very well.
Some days, you head out and everything just clicks. Your legs turn over effortlessly, your stride feels dynamic and springy, and the pace comes naturally.
On other days, it’s the complete opposite. Your legs feel heavy, every stride takes effort and instead of feeling light, you feel as though you’re running with weights strapped to your ankles.
There are plenty of possible reasons: sleep, stress, nutrition, temperature, humidity, previous workouts and your overall level of fatigue. The state of your nervous system may also play a role – and HRV can offer some insight into that.
So why can HRV be particularly useful after strength training?
Because the fatigue generated by a strength session doesn’t necessarily show up in your heart-rate data.
Your muscles may be heavily fatigued while your nervous system needs more time to recover. You may technically be ready to train the next day, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you’re ready for a workout requiring speed, explosiveness or high intensity.
WHAT CAUSES HRV TO DROP?
HRV isn’t a fixed number. It changes depending on your physiological state.
Recovery – particularly sufficient, high-quality sleep – supports a return towards your normal levels. Physical activity, meanwhile, can cause a temporary drop in HRV, with the size of that drop generally reflecting how demanding the workout was for your body.
That’s why you may see a lower-than-usual HRV the day after a hard running session, a demanding strength workout or a tough race.
There’s no reason to panic.
Think of it as feedback: your body is still working through the recovery process.
WHAT KIND OF RUN SHOULD YOU DO BEFORE STRENGTH TRAINING?
There’s no universal answer. Your training experience, age, workload from previous days, current training phase and the intensity of the planned strength session all matter.
There is, however, a useful rule of thumb.
If you have a demanding strength session scheduled for the afternoon or evening, keep any morning run on the same day easy and relatively short.
Why?
Because strength training requires more than just fresh muscles. It also demands concentration, coordination and good movement control. If you do a hard running workout in the morning, you may arrive at the gym already fatigued – and fatigue can compromise your technique when performing strength exercises.
AND WHAT SHOULD YOU RUN AFTER STRENGTH TRAINING?
For some runners, the worst of the “concrete legs” arrives the day after a strength session. For others, peak fatigue may not appear until 48 hours later.If you consistently monitor your HRV, you may start to recognise your own recovery pattern after a few weeks. That can be far more valuable than following a rigid rule such as, “I always run according to the same plan after strength training.”
- Example one: HRV drops the day after strength training. You did a hard leg workout yesterday, and today your HRV is significantly lower than usual. Your heavy legs confirm what the numbers are telling you, so you might choose a complete rest day, a very easy recovery run or another low-intensity activity, such as cycling.
- Example two: HRV starts to recover. Your legs feel better, but they still lack their usual explosiveness. Your morning HRV readings tell a similar story: the value is higher than yesterday, but still below your normal range. There’s no need to force a hard interval session. Instead, opt for an easy run, perhaps with a few strides, and move the more demanding workout to the following day.
- Example three: HRV returns to normal. After another good night’s sleep, your HRV is back within your typical range and your legs feel light again. That’s a good sign that you can return to your planned workout.
A SIMPLE RULE
Strength training doesn’t have to compete with running. When programmed properly, it can be one of the most valuable additions to a runner’s training plan.
Stronger legs, glutes and core muscles can help you maintain good running posture and preserve your technique as fatigue sets in – precisely when your body becomes more vulnerable to movement errors.
The key, however, is managing the overall load. It’s not enough to simply add another workout to your schedule and expect your body to adapt automatically. You also need to pay attention to how your body responds to the additional stress.
That’s why it’s worth looking beyond pace, distance, time and Training Load. Metrics such as HRV can help reveal a part of the training picture that isn’t visible on a heart-rate graph.
And the most important rule remains simple: do your hard workouts when your body is ready for them – not simply because your training calendar says it’s time.
